YOU CAN BE FREE FROM YOUR VICES AND ADDICTIONS

Most Christians are not free from the
bondage of sin, vices and addictions. They keep falling into the same
sins and bad habits over and over again. That is why many confess
that they cannot stop sinning, which is openly admitting defeat and
surrender to evil. The wages of sin is death. It is futile to keep on
confessing the same sins and then to keep on doing them. We will all
be judged by our deeds. The soul that sins will die, even if they
believed in Jesus. We have to stop sinning and be holy. If you keep
on sinning, you will end up in hell. Without holiness no one will see
the Lord.
Jesus came to take away the sins of the
world. He came to set the captives free, those who are enslaved by
the bondage of sin and addictions. Jesus said: “Truly,
truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of
sin.
35“The
slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain
forever.
36“So
if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36-38.
If Jesus has set you free, you will be free.
Jesus
can set you free, and He will set you free if you want to be free.
However, if you have no desire to be free because you enjoy your
sins, vices and addictions, then Jesus will not s
et you
free. If He has set you free and you returned to your sins and became
entangled and in bondage, Jesus will leave you in your bondage
because it was your choice. Many believers love their sins. They love
their lust and pride. They practice lying because it is beneficial to
them. They enjoy pornography, movies, the lust of the flesh and
worldly things. They defend their vices. They regard their bad
personality traits, anger, pride, aggression, laziness, seduction,
self-pity and lies as assets whereby they can manipulate, deceive and
exploit others for their own benefit. They love their own
personality, they love themselves. Many have built businesses,
empires, on crime, sin, lust and deceit. Many churches have been
built on false doctrines and lies. It is their livelihood. Many
Christians love the false doctrines like the Grace gospel and once
saved always saved, Calvinism and pre-election, because it gives them
license to keep on sinning. They hate the truth. They don’t want to
repent. They don’t want to stop sinning, be holy and walk in truth.
They don’t want deliverance, and so they remain in bondage and
perish in their sins.
Our biggest obstacle to deliverance and
obedience to Jesus is our self, our own flesh and the desires of our
flesh. That is why Jesus said:
"If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and
take up his cross and follow Me.” Matthew 16:24. We must choose to
deny ourselves, our own desires and pleasures, and go after Jesus,
obey Him, His words, His commands, at all cost.
If
we are not willing to deny ourselves the pleasures of sin and the
world and are not willing to give up our own plans, ambitions and
desires to follow Jesus and do what He commanded and requires of us,
then our faith is in vain, our hope of eternal life is in vain. If we
accept Jesus, obey Him, repent of sin and be baptized, seek to please
Him He will support and empower us every step of the way. We have to
follow Him with all our power and all our might. When we run out of
power He will strengthen us, but if we give up and give in to sin and
temptation, we will be defeated.
Take
a stand against sin. We read in James 4:1-10. “
1What
is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source
your pleasures that wage war in your members?
2You
lust and do not have;
so you
commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain;
so you
fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask.
3You
ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that
you may spend
it
on
your pleasures.
4You
adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is
hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the
world makes himself an enemy of God.
5Or
do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: “He jealously
desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”?
6But
He gives a greater grace. Therefore
it says,
“G
OD
IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD
BUT
GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE
.” 7Submit
therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
8Draw
near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you
sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
9Be
miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into
mourning and your joy to gloom.
10Humble
yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.”
As
long as we stay with Jesus, in obedience to Him, submitted to Him we
can overcome. Without Jesus we can do nothing.
May
Jesus bless you.
